This is a common problem for shophouse in Jakarta. Where to put the AC outdoor unit. The shophouse typology have three to five storey. For the upper storey, the AC outdoor unit can be placed on the roof. But for the lower level (1st storey) to save cost for the instalation material they put it on the shopfront and use a steel cage for safety reason.
Function-wise the steel cage served the purpose but if the client invest their money on the shopfront facade, the stell cage solution have to go. So in this project we proposed the alumunium grille solution. We place it vetically so you only can see the AC outdoor unit if you stand upright in-front of the shopfront. Even if you do that you can not actually see the AC outdoor unit because it is too dark.
The downside of this solution is only the cost and the maintenance of the AC outdoor unit. For the cost, I can not give you a good arguement but for the maintenance I can. We give the front side of the grille a hinge at the top side so it can be open for the maintenance. It's a little bit troublesome but it's worth the outcome. We get a clean look shopfront.
